Studio Vocal Microphone
Introducing Audio-Technica’s premier studio vocal microphone, the AT5040 cardioid condenser. The debut of our flagship 50 Series, the AT5040 represents a milestone in condenser design, offering remarkably musical high-fidelity performance, with profound realism and depth, presence and purity of sound.
Designed as a first-choice vocal microphone, the AT5040 features an extremely smooth top end with controlled sibilance. Large-diaphragm characteristics and fast transient response also make it ideal for recording acoustic instruments such as piano, guitar, strings and saxophone.

The AT5040 impressed, and seemed like a mic that will be considered a classic
Recording Hacks - voiceover shootout test
The first time I used the AT5040, I was immediately struck by its nuanced and delicate presence coupled with its super-accurate detail.
The AT5040 offers the elegance and natural sound of a well-designed large-diaphragm condenser microphone with the precision, wide frequency response and high SPL handling of a small-diaphragm microphone. The AT5040 is like super high-definition video—it captures everything in truthful resolution.
Audio-Technica has clearly achieved their goal of creating a first-class vocal/instrument microphone. The AT5040 somehow maintains accuracy while adding just the right amount of enhancement to vocals. Its ability to produce stunning realism sets it apart from the pack, and even if you can’t afford it, you really should make a point of hearing it.
...the AT5040 is an impressive microphone, both in terms of its innovative design and its gloriously smooth and detailed sound character.
